Bernardo Francisco de Hoyos de Seña (1711–1735) was a Spanish Jesuit priest and mystic known for his devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He played a significant role in the spread of the devotion to the Sacred Heart in Spain during the 18th century.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Bernardo Francisco de Hoyos de Seña was born on August 21, 1711, in Torrelobatón, a small town in the province of Valladolid, Spain. He was the eldest of eight children in a devout Catholic family. From a young age, he exhibited a deep spiritual inclination and a strong desire to serve God.

Jesuit Formation[edit | edit source]

At the age of 14, Bernardo entered the Jesuit novitiate in Medina del Campo. He underwent rigorous training and education, which included studies in philosophy and theology. His spiritual directors recognized his exceptional piety and mystical experiences, which were centered around the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Mystical Experiences[edit | edit source]

Bernardo is best known for his mystical experiences and visions of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. These experiences began in 1733, during his theological studies in Valladolid. He reported receiving several visions in which Jesus revealed to him the importance of spreading the devotion to His Sacred Heart. Bernardo's writings and accounts of these visions contributed significantly to the promotion of this devotion in Spain.

Promotion of the Sacred Heart Devotion[edit | edit source]

Bernardo's efforts to promote the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus included writing letters, composing prayers, and encouraging others to embrace this devotion. He collaborated with other Jesuits and laypeople to establish the devotion more firmly within the Spanish Church. His work laid the foundation for the later widespread acceptance and practice of the Sacred Heart devotion.

Death and Legacy[edit | edit source]

Bernardo Francisco de Hoyos de Seña died on November 29, 1735, at the young age of 24, due to typhus. Despite his short life, his impact on the promotion of the Sacred Heart devotion was profound. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on April 18, 2010.
