Bernheim Original

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Bernheim Original is a brand of wheat whiskey produced by the Heaven Hill Distilleries, Inc. It is named after the Bernheim Distillery, a facility currently owned by Heaven Hill, and the original Bernheim brothers, who were notable figures in the American whiskey industry.

History[edit | edit source]

The Bernheim Original brand was introduced in 2005 by Heaven Hill Distilleries, a company based in Bardstown, Kentucky, which is one of the largest and oldest distilleries in the United States. The brand was named in honor of the Bernheim Distillery and the Bernheim brothers, Isaac Wolfe Bernheim and Bernard Bernheim.

The Bernheim brothers were German immigrants who established the I.W. Harper brand of bourbon and built the original Bernheim Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky in the late 19th century. The distillery was later purchased by Schendley Industries, and the production of I.W. Harper was moved to the new Bernheim Distillery in Louisville.

Production[edit | edit source]

Bernheim Original is a straight wheat whiskey, which means it is made from a grain mixture that is at least 51% wheat. The rest of the mixture can include other grains like corn and barley. The whiskey is aged in new charred oak barrels for a minimum of seven years.

The production process of Bernheim Original follows the traditional methods of American whiskey making. The grains are milled and then cooked to create a mash. The mash is then fermented, distilled, and aged in barrels. The aging process gives the whiskey its color and much of its flavor.

Tasting Notes[edit | edit source]

Bernheim Original is known for its smooth and soft flavor profile. It has a sweet nose with hints of vanilla and honey. The palate is filled with the flavors of berries and tropical fruit, with a slight hint of spice. The finish is long and warming with notes of toasted nuts and grains.

Awards[edit | edit source]

Bernheim Original has received several awards for its quality and flavor. It was awarded a gold medal at the 2005 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and was named "Whiskey of the Year" by Whisky Advocate in 2013.
