Bess Eaton
Bess Eaton was a regional chain of doughnut and coffee shops based in the northeastern United States. The company was founded in 1953 by Angelo (Bangy) Gencarelli in Westerly, Rhode Island. Bess Eaton was known for its coffee, doughnuts, and other baked goods. The chain primarily operated in Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.
History[edit | edit source]
Bess Eaton was established in 1953 by Angelo Gencarelli. The name "Bess Eaton" was derived from the combination of the names of Gencarelli's wife, Bessie, and his son, Eaton. The first store was opened in Westerly, Rhode Island, and the chain quickly expanded throughout the region.
In the 1990s, Bess Eaton faced increased competition from larger national chains such as Dunkin' Donuts and Starbucks. Despite efforts to modernize and expand, the company struggled financially.
In 2004, Bess Eaton filed for bankruptcy and its assets were sold. Many of the locations were acquired by Tim Hortons, a Canadian coffee and doughnut chain, which rebranded the stores under its own name.
Products[edit | edit source]
Bess Eaton was known for its wide variety of doughnuts, including classic flavors such as glazed, chocolate frosted, and jelly-filled. The chain also offered a selection of muffins, bagels, and other baked goods. Bess Eaton's coffee was a popular item, with many customers praising its rich flavor.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Although Bess Eaton no longer exists as a brand, it remains a nostalgic memory for many residents of the northeastern United States. The company's focus on quality products and community-oriented service left a lasting impression on its customers.
