Beta-Hexachlorocyclohexane
Beta-Hexachlorocyclohexane (β-HCH) is one of the isomers of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH). It is a byproduct of the production of the insecticide lindane (γ-HCH). It is a persistent organic pollutant (POP) that has been banned globally under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants due to its high toxicity, persistence, and potential for long-range transport.
Chemical Structure and Properties[edit | edit source]
Beta-Hexachlorocyclohexane is a chlorinated cyclic hydrocarbon. Its chemical formula is C6H6Cl6. It is a white, crystalline solid with a slight, characteristic odor. It is not very soluble in water but is very soluble in fat, oils, and organic solvents.
Production and Use[edit | edit source]
Beta-Hexachlorocyclohexane is not produced intentionally but is a byproduct in the production of the insecticide lindane. Lindane production has been phased out in many countries due to concerns about its persistence and toxicity.
Health Effects[edit | edit source]
Exposure to beta-Hexachlorocyclohexane can occur through the skin, inhalation, and ingestion. It can cause a variety of health effects, including liver damage, neurotoxic effects, and possible cancer. It is considered a possible human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
Environmental Impact[edit | edit source]
Beta-Hexachlorocyclohexane is a persistent organic pollutant. It does not break down easily in the environment and can be transported long distances in the air and water. It can accumulate in the food chain, posing a risk to human health and the environment.
Regulation[edit | edit source]
Beta-Hexachlorocyclohexane is listed as a persistent organic pollutant under the Stockholm Convention. Its production and use are banned in many countries.
