Bibliothèque historique de la ville de Paris

It is located in the Marais district, housed in the Hôtel d'Angoulême Lamoignon. The library holds a significant collection of documents, maps, photographs, and prints related to the city's history, from the Middle Ages to the present day.
History[edit | edit source]
The Bibliothèque historique de la ville de Paris was founded in 1871, following the tumultuous events of the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune. Its creation was part of a broader effort to preserve and study the historical documents of Paris, which were at risk of being lost or destroyed during the period. Initially, the library's collections were housed in the Hôtel de Ville but were moved to the Hôtel d'Angoulême Lamoignon in 1969 to provide more space for its growing collections.
Collections[edit | edit source]
The BHVP's collections are vast and varied, encompassing a wide range of materials that document the urban, social, political, and cultural history of Paris. These include:
- Printed Works: Books, pamphlets, and periodicals related to Parisian history. - Manuscripts: Original documents, letters, and diaries that offer insights into the lives of Parisians through the ages. - Maps and Plans: A significant collection of historical maps and plans of Paris, which illustrate the city's development over centuries. - Photographs: An extensive photographic archive that captures the changing face of Paris and its inhabitants. - Prints and Posters: Artistic and commercial prints and posters that reflect the cultural trends and social movements of Paris.
