Big Game (American football)
Big Game is the annual American football game between the Stanford Cardinal and the California Golden Bears. The game is one of the oldest college football rivalries in the United States, having been first played in 1892.
History[edit | edit source]
The first Big Game was played on March 19, 1892, at San Francisco's Haight Street Grounds. The University of California won the inaugural game with a score of 14-10. Since then, the game has been played annually, with the exception of a few interruptions due to World War I and World War II.
The Axe[edit | edit source]
The winner of the Big Game is awarded the Stanford Axe, a trophy that has become a symbol of the rivalry. The Axe was first introduced in 1899 and has been a coveted prize ever since. The tradition of "stealing the Axe" has also become a part of the rivalry, with students from both universities attempting to capture the trophy from the other school.
Memorable Games[edit | edit source]
One of the most memorable Big Games took place in 1982, known simply as "The Play." In this game, the California Golden Bears executed a last-second, multi-lateral kickoff return to score a touchdown and win the game, despite the Stanford band having already entered the field in celebration.
Venues[edit | edit source]
The Big Game alternates between Stanford Stadium in Stanford, California, and California Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, California. Both venues are known for their large crowds and enthusiastic fans.
Traditions[edit | edit source]
The Big Game is surrounded by numerous traditions, including rallies, bonfires, and parades. Both universities host a series of events leading up to the game, fostering school spirit and camaraderie among students and alumni.
Notable Players[edit | edit source]
Over the years, many notable players have participated in the Big Game, some of whom have gone on to have successful careers in the NFL. These players include John Elway, Aaron Rodgers, and Andrew Luck.
