Bilateral oophorectomy
Bilateral Oophorectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of both ovaries. This procedure is often performed to treat or prevent diseases such as ovarian cancer or endometriosis.
Indications[edit | edit source]
Bilateral oophorectomy is typically indicated for women who have a high risk of developing ovarian cancer, such as those with a family history of the disease or those who have tested positive for certain genetic mutations like BRCA1 or BRCA2. It may also be performed in cases of severe endometriosis or other ovarian diseases that cause significant pain or discomfort.
Procedure[edit | edit source]
During a bilateral oophorectomy, the surgeon makes an incision in the abdomen or uses a laparoscope inserted through a small incision. The ovaries are then detached from the surrounding tissues and removed. The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia.
Risks and Complications[edit | edit source]
As with any surgical procedure, bilateral oophorectomy carries risks, including infection, bleeding, and damage to surrounding organs. Long-term complications may include early onset of menopause and associated symptoms, increased risk of osteoporosis, and potential impacts on sexual function.
Postoperative Care and Recovery[edit | edit source]
After the procedure, patients typically stay in the hospital for one to two days. Full recovery may take several weeks. Hormone replacement therapy may be recommended to manage symptoms of menopause.
