Bill Rasmussen

Bill Rasmussen was born on October 15, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in a family that valued education and sports, which influenced his later career choices. Rasmussen attended DePauw University, where he earned a degree in economics.

After graduating from DePauw University, Rasmussen began his career in broadcasting. He worked for several radio and television stations, gaining experience in sports broadcasting. His early career included positions at WTTT in Amherst, Massachusetts, and WWLP-TV in Springfield, Massachusetts.

In 1978, Bill Rasmussen co-founded the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network, better known as ESPN. The idea for ESPN came about when Rasmussen was fired from his job at the New England Whalers, a hockey team. He envisioned a 24-hour cable sports channel, which was a novel concept at the time.
Rasmussen, along with his son Scott Rasmussen and Ed Eagan, secured funding and a satellite transponder to launch the network. ESPN went on air for the first time on September 7, 1979, with the debut of "SportsCenter."
