Founded by Bill Rasmussen, his son Scott Rasmussen, and Ed Eagan, ESPN launched on September 7, 1979. It is headquartered in Bristol, Connecticut, with additional offices in major cities including New York City, Seattle, Miami, and Los Angeles. History

ESPN's journey began in 1978 when Bill Rasmussen, a former communications manager for the New England Whalers of the World Hockey Association, decided to create a network that would broadcast sports content 24 hours a day. The network officially launched on September 7, 1979, with its first broadcast being a slow-pitch softball game from the A.S.A. Softball Championship.
