Los Angeles (officially known as the City of Los Angeles and often abbreviated as L.A.) is the largest city in the state of California and the second-largest city in the United States. It is known for its Mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, and the entertainment industry.

Los Angeles was founded on September 4, 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve. It became a part of Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican–American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, becoming part of the United States.

Los Angeles is located in Southern California on the Pacific Coast. It is bordered by the San Gabriel Mountains to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and the San Fernando Valley to the north.

Los Angeles is home to several renowned educational institutions, including the University of Southern California (USC), the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and the California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA).

Los Angeles is home to many professional and collegiate sports teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers of the NBA, the Los Angeles Dodgers of MLB, and the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers of the NFL.
