Hollywood

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Hollywood is a neighborhood located in the central region of Los_Angeles, California, United States. Known worldwide, it is the historical center of movie studios and movie stars. The name "Hollywood" is often used as a metonym for the American film and television industry.

History[edit | edit source]

Hollywood was incorporated as a municipality in 1903. It was consolidated with the city of Los Angeles in 1910, and soon thereafter a prominent film industry emerged, eventually becoming the most recognizable in the world.

Film Industry[edit | edit source]

The birth of the American film industry began in Hollywood with the opening of Thomas Edison's studio in 1914. In the early 1900s, many motion picture patents were held by Edison's Motion Picture Patents Company in New Jersey, and filmmakers were often sued to stop their productions. To escape this, many filmmakers fled westward.

In Los Angeles, they found an ideal and idyllic location for filmmaking. Hollywood had diverse scenery that was much closer than several eastern studios. This, and the warm climate, made Hollywood an ideal place to shoot films year-round.

Hollywood Sign[edit | edit source]

The iconic Hollywood sign was created in 1923 as an advertisement for a local real estate development. Originally reading "Hollywoodland", the sign’s letters are 45 feet tall and 350 feet long. It has undergone several refurbishments over the years, including the removal of the "land" segment to simply say "Hollywood".

Hollywood Walk of Fame[edit | edit source]

The Hollywood Walk of Fame, which can be found on both sides of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street, is a tribute to over 2,000 artists who have made significant contributions to film, radio, television, theatre and the music industry.

Today[edit | edit source]

Today, Hollywood is a major center for film study and the production of motion pictures. Numerous historic Hollywood theaters are used as venues and concert stages to premiere major theatrical releases and host the Academy Awards. It is a popular destination for nightlife and tourism, and home to the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
