History[edit | edit source]
The brewery was established in 1817 by Johann Wallenborn in the town of Bitburg, located in the Eifel region of Rhineland-Palatinate. Initially, the brewery produced a variety of beers, but it gained prominence with the introduction of its pilsner in 1883. The pilsner style, which originated in Pilsen, Bohemia, became very popular in Germany, and Bitburger's version quickly became one of the most recognized.
During the 20th century, Bitburger Brewery expanded its production facilities and modernized its brewing processes. The brewery survived both World Wars and continued to grow in the post-war period. In the 1950s, Bitburger introduced the slogan "Bitte ein Bit," which translates to "Please, a Bit," and it became a well-known advertising campaign in Germany.
