Blumensaat's line
Blumensaat's line is a term used in radiology and orthopedics to describe a line drawn along the slope of the intercondylar roof on a lateral radiograph of the knee. It is named after the German surgeon, Peter Blumensaat.
Anatomy[edit | edit source]
Blumensaat's line represents the projection of the intercondylar roof, or the roof of the intercondylar notch, on a lateral radiograph of the knee. The intercondylar notch is a deep indentation located between the two condyles of the femur, and its roof is formed by the lower surface of the femoral shaft.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
Blumensaat's line is used as a reference point in the evaluation of knee injuries, particularly those involving the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). In a normal knee, the ACL should not cross Blumensaat's line. If it does, it may indicate an ACL injury.
