Board of Pharmacy Specialties
Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) is a professional organization dedicated to improving patient care and public health through the certification of pharmacy professionals. Established in 1976 by the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), BPS is recognized globally for setting standards for specialty pharmacist certification. The organization's mission is to advance the public health and elevate the role of the pharmacy profession through board certification of pharmacists.
History[edit | edit source]
The Board of Pharmacy Specialties was founded with the aim of recognizing individual pharmacists' advanced knowledge and skills in specific areas of pharmacy practice. Initially, the focus was on nuclear pharmacy as the first recognized specialty. Over the years, BPS has expanded its certification offerings to include multiple specialties in response to the evolving needs of healthcare and the pharmacy profession.
Certification Specialties[edit | edit source]
As of the current date, BPS offers certification in several pharmacy specialties, including, but not limited to:
- Ambulatory Care Pharmacy
- Critical Care Pharmacy
- Geriatric Pharmacy
- Nuclear Pharmacy
- Oncology Pharmacy
- Pediatric Pharmacy
- Pharmacotherapy
- Psychiatric Pharmacy
Each specialty certification requires candidates to meet specific eligibility criteria, which typically include a combination of education, training, and experience, followed by passing a comprehensive examination.
Certification Process[edit | edit source]
The certification process involves several steps designed to verify the knowledge and skills of candidates in their chosen specialty area. The process generally includes:
1. Application: Pharmacists submit an application demonstrating they meet the eligibility criteria for their chosen specialty. 2. Examination: Eligible candidates must pass a rigorous examination that tests their knowledge and skills in the specialty area. 3. Recertification: Certified pharmacists must undergo recertification every seven years to ensure they maintain a high level of expertise. This usually involves completing continuing education credits or passing a recertification exam.
Benefits of Certification[edit | edit source]
Certification by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties offers numerous benefits to pharmacists, the healthcare system, and patients, including:
- Recognition of advanced knowledge and skills in a pharmacy specialty area.
- Enhanced career opportunities and potential for advancement.
- Improved patient care through the application of specialized knowledge and skills.
- Contribution to the advancement of the pharmacy profession and healthcare delivery.
Challenges and Future Directions[edit | edit source]
The Board of Pharmacy Specialties faces ongoing challenges, such as keeping pace with the rapid advancements in healthcare and pharmacy practice, ensuring the relevance and rigor of certification examinations, and expanding the recognition and value of pharmacy specialty certification among healthcare professionals and the public. BPS continues to explore new specialties and adapt its certification processes to meet the changing needs of the profession and healthcare.
