Bob Kaufman
Bob Kaufman (April 18, 1925 – January 12, 1986) was an American beat poet and surrealist who was active in the San Francisco Renaissance. He is known for his oral poetry and his association with the Beat Generation.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Bob Kaufman was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. His mother was a Roman Catholic from Martinique, and his father was a German-Jewish Orthodox Jew. Kaufman was one of thirteen children. He spent his early years in New Orleans, where he was influenced by the rich cultural and musical heritage of the city.
Career[edit | edit source]
Kaufman moved to New York City in the 1940s, where he became involved with the jazz scene and the emerging Beat Generation. He later moved to San Francisco, where he became a prominent figure in the city's North Beach neighborhood. Kaufman was known for his spontaneous and improvisational style of poetry, often performing in coffeehouses and on the streets.
Kaufman's work was heavily influenced by jazz music, particularly the works of Charlie Parker and John Coltrane. His poetry often incorporated elements of surrealism and stream of consciousness.
