Diagram of human body cavities

A body cavity is a fluid-filled space inside the body that holds and protects internal organs. In humans and other animals, body cavities are essential for the organization and function of the body. They allow for the separation and protection of organs, as well as providing space for organs to change size and shape as needed.

Types of Body Cavities[edit]

The human body has several major cavities, each serving distinct functions and containing specific organs.

Dorsal Body Cavity[edit]

The dorsal body cavity is located along the posterior (back) side of the body. It is divided into two main parts:

  • Cranial cavity: This cavity houses the brain and is enclosed by the skull.
  • Vertebral cavity: Also known as the spinal cavity, it encases the spinal cord and is protected by the vertebral column.

Ventral Body Cavity[edit]

The ventral body cavity is located on the anterior (front) aspect of the body and is larger than the dorsal cavity. It is subdivided into:

  • Thoracic cavity: This cavity is enclosed by the rib cage and contains the heart and lungs. It is further divided into:
 * Pleural cavities: Each surrounds a lung.
 * Pericardial cavity: Contains the heart.
  • Abdominopelvic cavity: This cavity is divided into the abdominal and pelvic cavities:
 * Abdominal cavity: Contains organs such as the stomach, liver, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, and most of the intestines.
 * Pelvic cavity: Contains the bladder, some reproductive organs, and the rectum.

Functions of Body Cavities[edit]

Body cavities serve several important functions:

  • Protection: They protect internal organs from physical damage.
  • Support: Cavities provide a framework that supports and holds organs in place.
  • Compartmentalization: They separate organs and systems, preventing interference and allowing for specialized environments.
  • Flexibility: Cavities allow organs to expand and contract, such as the lungs during breathing or the stomach during digestion.
