The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (Portuguese: *Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estat stica*, abbreviated as IBGE) is the main provider of data and statistics in Brazil. It is a public institution that operates under the Ministry of the Economy and is responsible for conducting demographic censuses, economic surveys, and various other statistical studies.

The IBGE was established on January 29, 1936, during the government of President Get lio Vargas. It was created to centralize and standardize the collection of statistical data in Brazil, which was previously conducted by various regional and local agencies.

The primary functions of the IBGE include:

- Producing economic statistics, such as the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and inflation rates.
