Bree, Middle-earth
Bree is a fictional village in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, located east of the Shire and west of Rivendell. It is notable for being one of the few places where Men and Hobbits live in close proximity and interact regularly. Bree is situated at the crossroads of the Great East Road and the Greenway, making it a significant location for travelers and trade.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Bree is located in the central part of Eriador, nestled at the foot of Bree-hill. The village is surrounded by a hedge and has a gate that is closed at night. The region around Bree includes other smaller villages such as Staddle, Combe, and Archet, collectively known as the Bree-land.
History[edit | edit source]
Bree has a long history, dating back to the early days of Middle-earth. It was established by Men of the Edain during the Second Age. The village remained relatively undisturbed throughout the ages, even during the War of the Ring. Bree's strategic location made it a hub for news and trade, especially during the time of the Fellowship of the Ring.
Inhabitants[edit | edit source]
The population of Bree consists of both Men and Hobbits. The Men of Bree are known for their hospitality and are generally friendly towards strangers. The Hobbits of Bree are somewhat taller and more adventurous than their counterparts in the Shire. Notable inhabitants include Barliman Butterbur, the innkeeper of the Prancing Pony, and Nob, his hobbit servant.
The Prancing Pony[edit | edit source]
The Prancing Pony is the most famous inn in Bree, serving as a meeting place for travelers, including Aragorn, Gandalf, and the Hobbits Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Meriadoc Brandybuck, and Peregrin Took. The inn is known for its excellent ale and warm hospitality.
Significance in The Lord of the Rings[edit | edit source]
Bree plays a crucial role in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. It is in Bree that Frodo Baggins and his companions first meet Aragorn, who becomes their guide and protector. The village also serves as a place where important information is exchanged, and plans are made for the journey ahead.
