Brendan Hughes
Brendan Hughes (16 October 1948 – 16 February 2008) was a prominent Irish republican and a leading member of the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA). He was known for his involvement in the 1970s and 1980s during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Brendan Hughes was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and grew up in the Falls Road area, a predominantly Irish nationalist neighborhood. He became politically active at a young age, joining the IRA in the late 1960s.
IRA Involvement[edit | edit source]
Hughes quickly rose through the ranks of the Provisional IRA, becoming a key figure in the organization. He was involved in several high-profile operations, including the 1973 Old Bailey bombing in London. Hughes was arrested and imprisoned multiple times for his activities.
Hunger Strike[edit | edit source]
One of Hughes' most notable contributions to the republican cause was his participation in the 1980 Irish hunger strike. He was the Officer Commanding of the IRA prisoners in the Maze Prison (also known as Long Kesh) and played a crucial role in organizing the strike. The hunger strike aimed to achieve political status for republican prisoners, which had been revoked by the British government.
Later Life and Death[edit | edit source]
After his release from prison, Hughes remained active in republican politics but became increasingly critical of the Sinn Féin leadership, particularly its move towards the Good Friday Agreement. He believed that the agreement compromised the republican principles he had fought for.
Brendan Hughes passed away on 16 February 2008. His legacy remains a subject of debate within the republican community.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Hughes' life and actions have been the subject of various books and documentaries. His interviews were featured in the Boston College oral history project, which aimed to document the personal experiences of those involved in the Troubles.
