Brian Piccolo (March 31, 1943 – June 16, 1970) was an American professional football player who is best known for his time with the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL). He was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts and tragically passed away at the young age of 26 in New York City, New York.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Piccolo was born on March 31, 1943, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He attended Wake Forest University where he played college football.
Professional Career[edit | edit source]
Piccolo signed with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent in 1965. He played as a running back and was known for his determination and work ethic on the field. Piccolo's career was cut short when he was diagnosed with cancer in 1969. Despite his illness, he remained an inspiration to his teammates and fans.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Brian Piccolo's story was immortalized in the film Brian's Song, which depicted his friendship with teammate Gale Sayers and his battle with cancer. The movie brought awareness to his life and struggles, and continues to be a poignant reminder of his legacy.
Death[edit | edit source]
On June 16, 1970, at the age of 26, Brian Piccolo passed away in New York City, New York. His memory lives on through the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund, which was established in his honor.
