Brian L. Roberts (born June 28, 1959) is an American businessman who serves as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Comcast, an American telecommunications conglomerate. He is known for his role in expanding Comcast from a regional cable service to a global leader in telecommunications and media entertainment.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Brian Roberts was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Ralph Roberts, the founder of Comcast. He graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics.
Career[edit | edit source]
Roberts began working at Comcast during his summers while attending college. After graduating in 1981, he joined the company full-time and quickly moved through the ranks. In 1990, at the age of 31, Roberts was appointed as the President of Comcast. He became the CEO in 2002 and was later named Chairman of the Board.
Under his leadership, Comcast has grown significantly through strategic acquisitions and innovations. Notable milestones include the acquisition of AT&T Broadband in 2002, which made Comcast the largest cable provider in the United States, and the acquisition of a majority stake in NBCUniversal from General Electric in 2011, which expanded Comcast's range into broadcasting, cable networks, and film production.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Roberts is married and has three children. He is an avid squash player and has participated in several national squash tournaments.
Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]
Throughout his career, Roberts has received numerous awards for his leadership and contributions to the telecommunications industry. These include the Cable Television Hall of Fame and the Walter Kaitz Foundation's Diversity Advocate Award.
