Broadway theatre
Broadway theatre, also known simply as Broadway, refers to the theatrical performances presented in the 41 professional theatres, each with 500 or more seats, located in the Theater District and the Lincoln Center along Broadway, in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Broadway and London's West End together represent the highest commercial level of live theater in the English-speaking world.

The origins of Broadway theatre can be traced back to the late 18th century, when the first well-documented theatre productions in New York City were performed. The growth of Broadway as a major entertainment district in New York City was significantly influenced by the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, which helped make New York City a major center for trade, and subsequently for entertainment and the arts. By the late 19th century, Broadway was home to many theatres and was the center of American theatre.
