Broadway theatre, also known simply as Broadway, refers to the theatrical performances presented in the 41 professional theatres, each with 500 or more seats, located in the Theater District and the Lincoln Center along Broadway, in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Broadway and London's West End together represent the highest commercial level of live theater in the English-speaking world.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of Broadway theatre can be traced back to the late 18th century, when the first well-documented theatre productions in New York City were performed. The growth of Broadway as a major entertainment district in New York City was significantly influenced by the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, which helped make New York City a major center for trade, and subsequently for entertainment and the arts. By the late 19th century, Broadway was home to many theatres and was the center of American theatre.

Theatre District[edit | edit source]

The Theatre District is a popular tourist attraction in New York City. It is located in Midtown Manhattan, from around West 40th Street to West 54th Street, and from west of Sixth Avenue to east of Eighth Avenue, including Times Square. The district is home to Broadway theatres and numerous other performance venues.

Broadway Shows[edit | edit source]

Broadway shows are typically divided into two categories: plays and musicals. Musicals are the most popular form of entertainment on Broadway, often attracting large audiences and generating significant box office revenue. Some of the most famous Broadway musicals include The Phantom of the Opera, Cats, and Hamilton.

Production and Awards[edit | edit source]

Producing a Broadway show is a significant financial undertaking, often requiring millions of dollars in investment. Shows may be produced directly on Broadway or may transfer to Broadway after successful runs in off-Broadway theatres or other venues. The Tony Awards are the most prestigious awards in the Broadway theatre industry, recognizing excellence in live Broadway theatre.

Impact on Culture[edit | edit source]

Broadway theatre has had a significant impact on American culture and entertainment, influencing everything from popular music to television and film. Many Broadway shows have become cultural phenomena, and the songs from Broadway musicals have become standards in the American songbook.
