Bromus tomentellus

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Bromus tomentellus, also known as hairy brome or downy brome, is a species of grass in the family Poaceae. It is native to Europe and Asia, but has been introduced to other parts of the world, including North America.

Description[edit | edit source]

Bromus tomentellus is a perennial grass that grows up to 1.5 meters tall. The leaves are hairy, hence the common name "hairy brome". The inflorescence is a loose, open panicle with spikelets that are 15-30 mm long and 3-7 mm wide. The spikelets are typically covered in soft, downy hairs, giving the plant its other common name, "downy brome".

Distribution and habitat[edit | edit source]

Bromus tomentellus is native to Europe and Asia, but has been introduced to other parts of the world, including North America. It is typically found in grasslands, meadows, and open woodlands. It prefers well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of pH levels.

Ecology[edit | edit source]

Bromus tomentellus is a food source for various species of wildlife. The seeds are eaten by birds and small mammals, while the leaves provide forage for larger herbivores. The plant also provides cover for small animals and insects.

Cultivation[edit | edit source]

Bromus tomentellus is not typically cultivated for agricultural purposes, but it can be used in land reclamation projects due to its ability to grow in a variety of soil conditions.
