Bruichladdich distillery
Bruichladdich Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located on the Isle of Islay, in the Hebrides, Scotland. The distillery, which takes its name from the Gaelic for "hill of the shore", was established in 1881 by the Harvey brothers.
History[edit | edit source]
The Harvey brothers, who came from a dynastic whisky family, had previously owned two Glasgow distilleries. They designed Bruichladdich distillery with an innovative, state-of-the-art approach, incorporating ideas from the Industrial Revolution. The distillery was built from stone from the local shore and has a notably tall and narrow design, which contributes to the distinct character of its whisky.
In 1936, the distillery was sold to Associated Scottish Distillers Ltd, and it changed hands several times over the following decades. It was mothballed in 1994 by then-owners Jim Beam Brands. In 2000, it was bought by a group of private investors led by Mark Reynier. The distillery was renovated and reopened in 2001.
Production[edit | edit source]
Bruichladdich distillery produces three styles of whisky: unpeated Bruichladdich, heavily peated Port Charlotte, and super-heavily peated Octomore. The distillery is known for its experimental approach and has produced whiskies using barley from individual farms, organic barley, and even bere, an ancient variety of barley.
The distillery uses traditional methods of production, including a Victorian-era open mash tun and the original Harvey pot stills. It is one of the few distilleries in Scotland to carry out all stages of the whisky-making process, from barley to bottle, on one site.
Botanist Gin[edit | edit source]
In addition to whisky, Bruichladdich distillery also produces The Botanist, a gin made from 22 local botanicals. The Botanist is distilled in a unique Lomond pot-still, affectionately known as "Ugly Betty".
