Bryn Mawr

Bryn Mawr is a census-designated place (CDP) located across Radnor and Haverford Townships in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, and Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, just west of Philadelphia along the Main Line. It is home to Bryn Mawr College, a women's liberal arts college, and is known for its high level of education, historic architecture, and affluent residential areas.

Bryn Mawr was originally named Humphreysville, after the Humphreys family who owned much of the land. The town was later renamed Bryn Mawr, which means "big hill" in Welsh, by railroad agent William Wilson in 1869. The town has a rich history, with many of its buildings and structures dating back to the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Education[edit | edit source]

Bryn Mawr is known for its educational institutions, most notably Bryn Mawr College, a prestigious women's liberal arts college founded in 1885. The town is also home to the Shipley School, a coeducational independent school, and Baldwin School, a private girls' school.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Bryn Mawr is served by the SEPTA Paoli/Thorndale Line regional rail train and several bus routes. The Bryn Mawr station is a historic train station built in 1869.

Notable people[edit | edit source]

Several notable people have lived in Bryn Mawr, including actress Katharine Hepburn, author Margaret Mead, and former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.
