Delaware County, colloquially referred to as Delco, is a county located in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As of the 2020 census, the population was 576,830, making it the fifth-most populous county in Pennsylvania. The county seat is Media. The county was created on September 26, 1789, from part of Chester County and named for the Delaware River.

Geography

Delaware County is located in the southeastern part of Pennsylvania and is part of the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, PA-NJ-DE-MD Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is bordered to the east by Philadelphia County, to the west by Chester County, to the north by Montgomery County, and to the south by the state of Delaware.

The county has a total area of 191 square miles, of which 184 square miles is land and 6.8 square miles (3.6%) is water. The Delaware River forms the county's eastern boundary.

History

Delaware County was created on September 26, 1789, from part of Chester County. The county was named for the Delaware River, which in turn was named after Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr, an English nobleman and Virginia's first colonial governor.

Delaware County is governed by a five-member County Council. The county is part of the Court of Common Pleas of the 32nd Judicial District of Pennsylvania. The county is represented in the United States House of Representatives by members of the 5th and 7th congressional districts.
