Bujar Nishani
Bujar Nishani (29 September 1966 – 28 May 2022) was an Albanian politician who served as the President of Albania from 24 July 2012 to 24 July 2017. He was a member of the Democratic Party of Albania.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Bujar Nishani was born in Durrës, Albania. He completed his primary and secondary education in his hometown. Nishani graduated from the Skanderbeg Military University in 1988. He later pursued further studies in the United States, where he attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, earning a degree in Defense Resources Management. Additionally, he obtained a law degree from the University of Tirana.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Nishani's political career began in the early 1990s when he joined the Democratic Party of Albania. He held various positions within the party and the government. In 2005, he was appointed as the Minister of Interior in the government of Prime Minister Sali Berisha. He later served as the Minister of Justice from 2009 to 2011 and again as the Minister of Interior from 2011 to 2012.
Presidency[edit | edit source]
Bujar Nishani was elected as the President of Albania by the Parliament of Albania on 11 June 2012. He took office on 24 July 2012, succeeding Bamir Topi. During his presidency, Nishani focused on issues such as judicial reform, the fight against corruption, and strengthening Albania's ties with the European Union and NATO. His term ended on 24 July 2017, and he was succeeded by Ilir Meta.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Bujar Nishani was married to Odeta Nishani, and they had two children. He was known for his dedication to public service and his efforts to improve the political and social landscape of Albania.
Death[edit | edit source]
Bujar Nishani passed away on 28 May 2022 at the age of 55.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Nishani is remembered for his contributions to the Albanian political scene and his efforts to promote democratic values and governance in the country.
