Bukola Saraki (born 19 December 1962) is a Nigerian politician who served as the President of the Nigerian Senate from 2015 to 2019. He was previously the Governor of Kwara State from 2003 to 2011. Saraki is a member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP).

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Bukola Saraki was born on 19 December 1962 in Lagos, Nigeria. He is the son of Olusola Saraki, a prominent Nigerian politician. Saraki attended the prestigious King's College, Lagos for his secondary education. He later proceeded to the University of London, where he obtained a degree in Medicine and Surgery. He also attended the London School of Economics for his postgraduate studies.

Medical Career[edit | edit source]

Before venturing into politics, Saraki worked as a medical doctor. He practiced medicine at Rush Green Hospital in Essex, United Kingdom, and later returned to Nigeria to work at the Societe Generale Bank (Nigeria).

Governor of Kwara State[edit | edit source]

Bukola Saraki was elected as the Governor of Kwara State in 2003 and was re-elected in 2007. During his tenure, he implemented various reforms in the state's health and education sectors. He also initiated the Kwara State Agricultural Modernization Programme, which aimed to boost agricultural productivity in the state.

President of the Nigerian Senate[edit | edit source]

In 2015, Saraki was elected as the President of the Nigerian Senate. His tenure was marked by significant legislative activities, including the passage of the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit Bill. Saraki's leadership in the Senate was also notable for its efforts to improve transparency and accountability in government.

Bukola Saraki's political career has been marred by several controversies. He faced allegations of corruption and was tried by the Code of Conduct Tribunal for false declaration of assets. However, he was acquitted of all charges in 2018.

Bukola Saraki is married to Toyin Saraki, and they have four children. He is known for his philanthropic activities and has been involved in various charitable organizations.
