Lagos

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Lagos is the most populous city in Nigeria, and the second largest in Africa, after Cairo, Egypt. It is one of the fastest growing cities in the world and also one of the most populous urban areas. Lagos is a major economic hub in Nigeria and houses one of the largest and busiest ports on the continent.

History[edit | edit source]

The area around Lagos was initially inhabited by the Awori subgroup of the Yoruba people in the 15th century. Under the leadership of the Oloye Olofin, the Awori moved to an island now called Lagos Island, where they founded a new city called Eko.

In the 16th century, the Portuguese explorer Rui de Sequeira visited the area and named it Lagos, which means "lakes" in Portuguese. Lagos was a major center of the slave trade until 1851 when it was annexed by the British Empire.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Lagos is located in the southwestern part of Nigeria, on the Atlantic Ocean. The city spans across a series of islands, including Lagos Island, Victoria Island and Ikoyi, which are separated from the mainland by the main channel draining the lagoon into the Atlantic Ocean, which forms Lagos Harbour.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Lagos is Nigeria's economic hub and is known for its bustling business activities. It is home to Nigeria's Nollywood, one of the largest film industries in the world. The city also has a thriving music scene, which has birthed a variety of styles such as Highlife, JuJu, Fuji, and Afrobeat.

Transport[edit | edit source]

Lagos has a high rate of public transport usage, with a mix of officially regulated and informally run services. The Lagos Rail Mass Transit system is under development and is expected to ease traffic congestion in the city.

Education[edit | edit source]

Lagos has a large number of educational institutions, including the University of Lagos, Lagos State University, and Pan-Atlantic University.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Lagos is a cultural hub in Nigeria and hosts numerous music festivals, art exhibitions, and cultural festivals. Its cuisine is a unique blend of traditional Nigerian, continental and Asian foods.
