Bundibugyo District is a district in the Western Region of Uganda. It is bordered by Ntoroko District to the north, Kabarole District to the east, Kibaale District to the south, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. The district headquarters are located in the town of Bundibugyo.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Bundibugyo District is characterized by its mountainous terrain, as it lies on the western slopes of the Rwenzori Mountains. The district is part of the Albertine Rift, which is known for its rich biodiversity and unique ecosystems. The Semuliki National Park and the Semuliki River are significant geographical features in the district.
History[edit | edit source]
Bundibugyo District was established in 1974. It was originally part of the larger Tooro Kingdom, which was one of the traditional kingdoms in Uganda. The district has experienced various challenges, including conflicts related to ethnic tensions and the impact of the Allied Democratic Forces insurgency in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Economy[edit | edit source]
The economy of Bundibugyo District is primarily based on agriculture. The fertile soils and favorable climate allow for the cultivation of crops such as cocoa, coffee, bananas, and cassava. Cocoa is a major cash crop and a significant source of income for the local population. Livestock farming is also practiced, with goats and cattle being the most common.

The district is home to several ethnic groups, including the Bamba, Bakonzo, and Batooro. The Bamba are the predominant ethnic group in the district. The population is predominantly rural, with most people living in small villages and engaging in subsistence farming.
Health and Education[edit | edit source]
Bundibugyo District faces challenges in health and education, with limited access to healthcare facilities and educational institutions. The district has several health centers, but they are often under-resourced. Efforts are being made to improve healthcare delivery and educational opportunities, with support from the government and non-governmental organizations.
