Burkitt Lymphoma[edit | edit source]
Burkitt lymphoma is a highly aggressive form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that is most commonly found in children in sub-Saharan Africa. It is named after Denis Parsons Burkitt, who first identified the disease in 1958. The disease is characterized by the rapid growth of tumors in the jaw or abdomen.
Types of Burkitt Lymphoma[edit | edit source]
- Endemic Burkitt lymphoma - Commonly found in Africa and associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection.
- Sporadic Burkitt lymphoma - Occurs worldwide and is not associated with EBV.
- Immunodeficiency-associated Burkitt lymphoma - Often seen in patients with HIV/AIDS.
