Butte County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 10,143. Its county seat is Belle Fourche.

Butte County was created in 1883 and organized in 1886. The name "Butte" refers to the unique geographical features in the area, including several prominent buttes.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,266 square miles, of which 2,250 square miles is land and 16 square miles (0.7%) is water.
