C. Louis Leipoldt (28 December 1880 – 12 April 1947) was a South African poet, playwright, paediatrician, and culinary writer. He is considered one of the greatest Afrikaans poets and his work has had a lasting impact on Afrikaans literature.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Christian Frederik Louis Leipoldt was born in Worcester, Western Cape, South Africa, into a family with strong cultural and literary interests. His father was a missionary and his mother was deeply involved in the cultural life of their community. Leipoldt was educated in South Africa and in London, where he qualified as a doctor. Despite his medical career, Leipoldt's passion lay in literature and the arts.

During the Second Boer War, Leipoldt worked as a medical inspector for the concentration camps established by the British, an experience that deeply affected him and influenced his later work. After the war, he continued his medical practice but also devoted himself to writing.

Leipoldt's literary output was prolific and varied. He wrote poetry, plays, novels, cookbooks, and works on botanical subjects. His poetry, often lyrical and deeply emotional, explored themes of love, nature, and the human condition, reflecting his profound connection to the South African landscape and its people.
