CD319

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

CD319, also known as SLAMF7 or Signaling Lymphocytic Activation Molecule Family Member 7, is a protein that in humans is encoded by the CD319 gene. This protein is a member of the Signaling Lymphocytic Activation Molecule (SLAM) family and plays a crucial role in the regulation of immune responses.

Function[edit | edit source]

CD319 is a cell surface glycoprotein that is expressed predominantly on Natural Killer (NK) cells, plasma cells, and certain subsets of T cells. It acts as a co-stimulatory receptor in the immune system, enhancing the activation and function of NK cells and cytotoxic T cells. CD319 is involved in the regulation of antibody production by plasma cells. Its interaction with other members of the SLAM family can lead to various signaling pathways that are important for the immune response, including the promotion of cell proliferation, survival, and cytokine production.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

CD319 has been identified as a potential therapeutic target in multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer characterized by the abnormal proliferation of plasma cells. Antibodies targeting CD319, such as Elotuzumab, have been developed and approved for the treatment of multiple myeloma. These therapies work by enhancing the immune system's ability to recognize and kill cancer cells. Additionally, the expression of CD319 has been explored as a biomarker for the diagnosis and prognosis of certain hematological malignancies.

Research[edit | edit source]

Research on CD319 is ongoing, with studies focusing on its role in immune regulation and its potential as a target for immunotherapy in various cancers and autoimmune diseases. Understanding the signaling pathways and interactions of CD319 with other molecules in the immune system could lead to the development of new therapeutic strategies for treating immune-related disorders.
