CEP76
CEP76 (Centrosomal Protein 76 kDa) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the CEP76 gene. This protein is a member of the centrosomal family of proteins, which play a crucial role in cell cycle regulation, cell division, and the replication of centrosomes. The centrosome is a key cellular structure acting as a major microtubule-organizing center, thus playing a vital role in the process of mitosis and cellular organization.
Function[edit | edit source]
CEP76 has been identified as a component of the centrosome that is involved in the maintenance of centrosome cohesion and integrity during the cell cycle, particularly in the S phase and M phase. It is implicated in the regulation of centrosome duplication and is believed to function as a suppressor of centrosome over-duplication, thereby maintaining genomic stability. The protein interacts with other centrosomal proteins, contributing to the proper formation of the mitotic spindle and ensuring accurate chromosome segregation during cell division.
Gene[edit | edit source]
The CEP76 gene is located on human chromosome 1. The gene undergoes transcription to produce a messenger RNA (mRNA) that is translated into the CEP76 protein. Variations in this gene may influence the function of the protein and have been studied in the context of their potential role in human diseases, particularly those related to cell division anomalies and cancer.
Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]
Alterations in the expression or function of CEP76 have been explored in the context of cancer biology. Given its role in maintaining centrosome integrity and preventing over-duplication, mutations or dysregulation of CEP76 could contribute to the chromosomal instability observed in cancer cells. Research is ongoing to elucidate the precise mechanisms by which CEP76 functions and its potential as a target for cancer therapy.
