From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Café Moment bombing was a terrorist attack that occurred on March 9, 2002, in the Rehavia neighborhood of Jerusalem, Israel. The attack targeted Café Moment, a popular coffee shop, and resulted in the death of 11 people, with over 50 others injured. This event is part of the larger context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, specifically during the period known as the Second Intifada, a time marked by increased violence between Israeli and Palestinian groups.

Background[edit | edit source]

The Second Intifada, which began in September 2000, saw a significant escalation in violence between Israelis and Palestinians. This period was characterized by suicide bombings, shootings, and military operations, leading to a high number of casualties on both sides. The Café Moment bombing was one of several attacks targeting civilians in public places, aimed at spreading fear and disrupting daily life in Israel.

The Attack[edit | edit source]

On the evening of March 9, 2002, a Palestinian suicide bomber entered Café Moment, located close to the official residence of the Israeli Prime Minister. The café was busy with young people enjoying their Saturday night. The bomber detonated an explosive belt, causing a massive explosion that destroyed the café and caused casualties among the patrons and bystanders. The Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine, a Palestinian Islamist organization, claimed responsibility for the attack, stating it was in retaliation for Israeli military actions in Palestinian territories.

Aftermath[edit | edit source]

The Café Moment bombing had a profound impact on Israeli society and its approach to security. In response to this and other attacks, Israel increased its military operations in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and began the construction of the West Bank Barrier, a move that was highly controversial and led to international debate regarding its legality and morality. The attack also led to a reassessment of security measures in public places across Israel, with increased security checks becoming a common practice.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The bombing of Café Moment remains a stark reminder of the human cost of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It is commemorated by both the victims' families and the wider Israeli community as a symbol of the ongoing struggle for peace and security in the region. The site of the café has since been rebuilt and continues to operate, serving as a testament to resilience in the face of terrorism.
