Café du Monde

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Café du Monde is a renowned coffeehouse located in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. Established in 1862, it is one of the oldest coffee establishments in the country and is best known for its café au lait and beignets.

History[edit | edit source]

The original Café du Monde was established at the upper end of the New Orleans French Market in 1862. It has been serving its signature café au lait and beignets ever since. The café is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and only closes on Christmas Day and when occasional hurricanes pass too close to New Orleans.

Menu[edit | edit source]

The menu at Café du Monde is limited but distinctive. The café au lait is made with half coffee (with chicory) and half hot milk, a traditional style of coffee drinking in New Orleans. The beignets are square French-style doughnuts, lavishly covered with powdered sugar. In addition to café au lait and beignets, the café also serves iced coffee and soft drinks.

Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

Café du Monde is an integral part of New Orleans culture. It has been featured in many films and television shows set in the city. The café is also a popular tourist destination, with visitors flocking to try the famous café au lait and beignets. It is also a favorite spot for locals, who enjoy the café's outdoor seating and the opportunity to people-watch in the bustling French Quarter.
