The band's lyrics, often sung in a monotone style by lead vocalist John McCrea, are known for their sarcasm, wit, and social commentary.
History[edit | edit source]
Cake was formed in 1991 by vocalist John McCrea, guitarist Greg Brown, bassist Sean McFessel, drummer Frank French, and trumpeter Vince DiFiore. The band released their debut album, Motorcade of Generosity, in 1994, which gained them a local following. Their breakthrough came with their second album, Fashion Nugget (1996), which included hits such as "The Distance" and a cover of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive," showcasing the band's eclectic style and humor.
Following the success of Fashion Nugget, Cake released several more albums, including Prolonging the Magic (1998), Comfort Eagle (2001), and Pressure Chief (2004), each continuing to build on the band's distinctive sound and lyrical style. Despite changes in the lineup over the years, with McCrea and DiFiore being the constant members, Cake has maintained a consistent presence in the alternative rock scene.
