Calcium selenide

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Calcium selenide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula CaSe. It is a white to yellowish powder that is insoluble in water. Calcium selenide is a member of the alkaline earth chalcogenides, which are compounds formed between alkaline earth metals and chalcogen elements.

Structure and Properties[edit | edit source]

Calcium selenide crystallizes in the cubic rock salt structure, similar to other alkaline earth chalcogenides such as calcium sulfide (CaS) and calcium telluride (CaTe). In this structure, each calcium ion is surrounded by six selenide ions, and each selenide ion is surrounded by six calcium ions, forming an octahedral coordination.

The compound is known for its high melting point of 2,525 °C and its ability to sublime at around 1,250 °C. It is typically prepared by the direct reaction of calcium and selenium at high temperatures.

Applications[edit | edit source]

Calcium selenide is primarily used in the field of optoelectronics and semiconductors. It is a material of interest for its potential use in infrared applications due to its wide band gap and optical properties. Additionally, it can be used in the production of phosphors for light-emitting devices.

Safety and Handling[edit | edit source]

Calcium selenide should be handled with care, as selenium compounds can be toxic. Proper safety equipment, such as gloves and goggles, should be used when handling the compound. It should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from moisture and incompatible materials.
