Calgary is a city in the western Canadian province of Alberta. With a population of over 1.3 million, it is Alberta's largest city and Canada's third-largest municipality. Calgary is situated at the confluence of the Bow River and the Elbow River in the south of the province, in an area of foothills and prairie, about 80 km (50 mi) east of the front ranges of the Canadian Rockies. This strategic location has made it a key centre for trade and commerce in western Canada. The Calgary Metropolitan Region is home to over 1.4 million people, making it one of the fastest-growing regions in the country.

History[edit | edit source]

The area around Calgary was first inhabited by pre-Clovis people whose presence has been traced back at least 11,000 years. The city itself was founded as Fort Calgary in 1875 by the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP), to protect the western plains from American whiskey traders. Calgary grew significantly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, largely due to its status as a hub for a burgeoning cattle industry and its key position on the railway. The discovery of large oil reserves nearby in the mid-20th century transformed Calgary into one of Canada's wealthiest cities, attracting thousands of people seeking employment opportunities.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Calgary's economy is largely centered around the petroleum industry; however, agriculture, tourism, and high-tech industries also contribute to the city's economic growth. It is home to the second-highest number of corporate head offices in Canada among the country's 800 largest corporations. In recent years, Calgary has been recognized for its high quality of life and low unemployment rate.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Calgary is known for its vibrant cultural scene, hosting numerous festivals throughout the year, including the world-famous Calgary Stampede, a ten-day rodeo and exhibition billed as "The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth." The city also boasts a number of museums, such as the Glenbow Museum and the Calgary Science Centre, as well as a thriving music and arts scene.

Education[edit | edit source]

The city is home to several post-secondary institutions, including the University of Calgary, Mount Royal University, and Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). These institutions play a significant role in the city's education and research activities.

Sports[edit | edit source]

Calgary is a sports city, having hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics. The city has professional teams in hockey (Calgary Flames), football (Calgary Stampeders), and soccer (Cavalry FC). It also has a vibrant community sports culture, with facilities for skiing, snowboarding, skating, and more.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Calgary's transportation network includes a comprehensive system of roads, an international airport (Calgary International Airport), and a public transit system that features buses and light rail transit (LRT), known locally as the CTrain. The city's strategic location makes it a key logistics and distribution hub for goods moving across Canada and to international markets.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Calgary is located in the Grassland region of Alberta, offering stunning views of the nearby Rockies. The city's geography is characterized by the nearby mountain ranges, rolling hills, and the two rivers that run through it, creating a diverse and picturesque landscape.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

Calgary is one of Canada's most diverse cities, with a significant population of immigrants. This diversity is reflected in the city's culture, food, and community events.

Climate[edit | edit source]

The city experiences a continental climate with long, cold winters and short, warm summers. Calgary is also known for its Chinook winds, which can raise the winter temperature by up to 15 degrees Celsius in a few hours, providing a temporary respite from the cold.
