Calvin Hastings Plimpton (October 7, 1918January 30, 2007) was an American physician and educator. He is best known for his tenure as the President of Amherst College and later as the President of the American University of Beirut.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Calvin Plimpton was born in New York City, New York. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy and later graduated from Amherst College in 1940. He earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1944.

Medical Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his medical degree, Plimpton served in the United States Army Medical Corps during World War II. Following the war, he worked at various hospitals and medical institutions, including the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.

Academic Career[edit | edit source]

In 1960, Plimpton was appointed as the President of Amherst College, a position he held until 1971. During his tenure, he was instrumental in modernizing the college's curriculum and expanding its facilities.

In 1977, Plimpton became the President of the American University of Beirut, where he served until 1984. His leadership was marked by efforts to maintain the university's operations during the Lebanese Civil War.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Calvin Plimpton was married and had several children. He passed away on January 30, 2007, in Westwood, Massachusetts.
