Campari[edit | edit source]

A bottle of Campari in the United States

Campari is an Italian alcoholic liqueur, considered an aperitif, obtained from the infusion of herbs and fruit in alcohol and water. It is a type of bitter, characterized by its dark red color and distinctive flavor.

History[edit | edit source]

Campari was invented in 1860 by Gaspare Campari in Novara, Italy. Originally, it was called "Bitter all'uso d'Hollanda". The recipe, which remains a closely guarded secret, is said to contain over 60 ingredients. In 1904, the first production plant was opened in Sesto San Giovanni, near Milan, marking the beginning of the brand's international expansion.

Production[edit | edit source]

The production of Campari involves the infusion of a blend of herbs, aromatic plants, and fruit in alcohol and water. The exact recipe is a closely guarded secret, known only to a few people. The distinctive red color of Campari was originally derived from carmine, a dye made from crushed cochineal insects, but since 2006, artificial coloring has been used.

Flavor Profile[edit | edit source]

Campari is known for its bitter taste, which is balanced by sweet and spicy notes. The flavor is complex, with hints of cherry, clove, cinnamon, and orange peel. This unique taste makes it a popular ingredient in many classic cocktails.

Cocktails[edit | edit source]

Campari is a key ingredient in several classic cocktails, including the Negroni, the Americano, and the Boulevardier. It is also enjoyed on its own, served over ice or with soda water.
