Canadian Shield

The Canadian Shield, also known as the Laurentian Plateau, is a large area of exposed Precambrian igneous and high-grade metamorphic rocks that forms the ancient geological core of the North American continent (the North American Craton). Comprising much of northeastern and central Canada, it covers over half of the country and also extends into the northern United States as the Adirondack Mountains and the Superior Upland. The Canadian Shield is among the world's oldest geological features, with regions dating back over 4 billion years.

Geography[edit | edit source]

The Canadian Shield occupies almost 50% of the total land area of Canada and a small part of the northern United States. It is characterized by a rocky landscape of lakes and swamps, covered by dense forest. The region is rich in mineral resources, including gold, silver, zinc, copper, and uranium.

Geology[edit | edit source]

The Canadian Shield is composed of some of the world's oldest rocks, formed during the Precambrian era, over a billion years ago. These rocks have been shaped by glaciation, the process where glaciers erode or deposit materials on the landscape. The Shield's geology is complex, with a mix of igneous and metamorphic rocks, including granite, gneiss, and schist.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The Canadian Shield is rich in natural resources, making it a key area for Canada's mining industry. It is one of the world's leading producers of nickel, copper, gold, and uranium. The region also has significant deposits of silver, zinc, and diamonds. In addition to mining, the Canadian Shield's forests support a thriving timber industry.

Flora and Fauna[edit | edit source]

The Canadian Shield is home to a diverse range of plant and animal species. The region's forests are dominated by boreal species such as spruce, pine, and fir. Animal species found in the Canadian Shield include the moose, black bear, wolf, and lynx, as well as numerous bird and fish species.
