Canton, Michigan is a charter township in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. As of the 2020 census, the township had a population of 98,659, making it one of the fastest-growing communities in the state.

History[edit | edit source]

Canton was created by an act of the Michigan Territorial Legislature on March 7, 1834, from a portion of Plymouth Township. It was named after the city of Canton (now Guangzhou) in China.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Canton is located at coordinates 42°18′N 83°29′W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 36.0 square miles (93.2 km²), of which 36.0 square miles (93.2 km²) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²), or 0.11%, is water.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the 2020 census, there were 98,659 people, 35,911 households, and 26,123 families residing in the township. The population density was 2,740.5 per square mile (1,058.1/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 70.1% White, 10.2% African American, 15.3% Asian, and 4.4% from other races.

Canton is home to a variety of businesses and industries. The township has a strong retail sector, with several shopping centers and plazas. Additionally, Canton is known for its automotive industry presence, with several suppliers and manufacturers located in the area.

Canton is served by the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools district, which includes several elementary, middle, and high schools. The district is known for its high academic standards and comprehensive extracurricular programs.
