Canton is a city in Lincoln County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 3,486 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Lincoln County.

Canton was platted in 1868. The city was named after Canton, China, via the Canton River. A post office has been in operation in Canton since 1868.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Canton is located at 43°18′12″N 96°35′42″W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.22 square miles (8.34 km²), of which 3.21 square miles (8.31 km²) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km²) is water.

2010 census[edit | edit source]
As of the census of 2010, there were 3,057 people, 1,204 households, and 792 families residing in the city. The population density was 952.0 inhabitants per square mile (367.5/km²). There were 1,306 housing units at an average density of 406.6 per square mile (157.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.8% White, 0.3% African American, 1.4% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,110 people, 1,204 households, and 792 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,015.0 people per square mile (391.8/km²). There were 1,306 housing units at an average density of 426.3 per square mile (164.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.17% White, 0.19% African American, 1.06% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.74% of the population.

Canton is served by the Canton School District, which includes Canton High School.
