Cantuzumab mertansine

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Cantuzumab mertansine is a monoclonal antibody designed for the treatment of cancer. This drug was developed by Immunogen Inc.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Cantuzumab mertansine works by targeting the CanAg antigen, a protein found in many types of cancer cells, including colorectal cancer and pancreatic cancer. The drug is composed of a monoclonal antibody, cantuzumab, linked to a cytotoxic agent, mertansine. The antibody binds to the CanAg antigen on the surface of cancer cells, allowing the cytotoxic agent to enter and kill the cell.

Clinical Trials[edit | edit source]

Cantuzumab mertansine has been tested in several clinical trials. In a phase I trial, the drug showed some efficacy in patients with CanAg-positive tumors. However, in a phase II trial, the drug did not meet its primary endpoint of improving overall survival in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of cantuzumab mertansine include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Serious side effects can include neutropenia, a condition characterized by low levels of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell.

Future Development[edit | edit source]

Despite the disappointing results of the phase II trial, research into cantuzumab mertansine continues. Scientists are exploring ways to increase the drug's efficacy, such as combining it with other treatments or modifying the antibody to better target cancer cells.
