Carlo Gatti
Carlo Gatti (1817 – 1878) was a Swiss entrepreneur who is best known for his pioneering work in the ice cream industry in the United Kingdom. He is often credited with popularizing ice cream in Victorian London.

Carlo Gatti was born in Marogno, a small village in the Swiss Alps, in 1817. He came from a family of modest means and initially worked in the family business, which involved trading chestnuts and other goods.
Move to London[edit | edit source]
In the 1840s, Gatti moved to London in search of better opportunities. He initially worked as a street musician and later opened a café in Holborn. His café became popular for its hot chocolate and other Swiss delicacies.
Ice Cream Business[edit | edit source]
Gatti's most significant contribution came in the 1850s when he started selling ice cream. He imported ice from Norway and stored it in a specially constructed ice well near King's Cross. This allowed him to sell ice cream at a lower price than his competitors, making it accessible to the general public. His ice cream stands became a common sight at fairs and public events.

In addition to his ice cream business, Gatti expanded into other areas. He opened several restaurants and music halls, including the famous Gatti's Music Hall in Westminster. He also ventured into the ice trade, supplying ice to other businesses in London.
