Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo is a prominent figure known for his significant contributions to peace and humanitarian efforts in East Timor. Born on February 3, 1948, in the village of Wailakama, near Baucau, East Timor, Belo is a Roman Catholic bishop and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo was born into a devout Catholic family. He pursued his early education in East Timor before moving to Portugal to continue his studies. Belo joined the Salesians of Don Bosco, a Roman Catholic religious institute, and was ordained as a priest in 1980. He furthered his education in Rome, where he studied philosophy and theology.
Role in East Timor[edit | edit source]
Belo returned to East Timor in 1981, a time when the region was under Indonesian occupation following the invasion in 1975. He was appointed as the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Dili in 1983. In this role, Belo became a vocal advocate for peace and human rights, often speaking out against the violence and oppression faced by the East Timorese people.
Nobel Peace Prize[edit | edit source]
In 1996, Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo, along with José Ramos-Horta, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for "their work towards a just and peaceful solution to the conflict in East Timor." The Nobel Committee recognized their efforts in bringing international attention to the plight of the East Timorese and their struggle for independence.

After East Timor gained independence in 2002, Belo continued his work in the church and humanitarian fields. He resigned as the Apostolic Administrator of Dili in 2002, citing health reasons, and moved to Portugal. Belo has remained an influential figure in advocating for peace and reconciliation.
