History[edit | edit source]

The Carlton Hotel was designed by the renowned hotelier César Ritz and opened its doors in 1899. It quickly became one of London's most prestigious hotels, known for its opulent interiors and high standards of service. The hotel was part of the Ritz Hotel Development Company, which also owned the famous Ritz Hotel in Piccadilly.

During its heyday, the Carlton Hotel was a popular destination for royalty, politicians, and celebrities. It played a significant role in the social and cultural life of London in the early 20th century.

Architecture[edit | edit source]

The Carlton Hotel was an example of Edwardian architecture, characterized by its grand facades and elaborate interiors. The design incorporated elements of the Beaux-Arts style, which was popular in Europe at the time. The hotel's public spaces, including its grand ballroom and dining rooms, were noted for their luxurious decor and attention to detail.

Demolition[edit | edit source]

Despite its historical significance, the Carlton Hotel was demolished in 1957. The site was redeveloped, and the building that replaced it now houses offices and retail spaces. The demolition of the Carlton Hotel marked the end of an era for one of London's most iconic hotels.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Although the Carlton Hotel no longer exists, its legacy lives on in the history of London's hospitality industry. It set a standard for luxury and service that influenced many other hotels in the city and around the world.
