Carso DOC is a Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) wine region located in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy. The region is known for its unique terroir and the production of high-quality wines, particularly white wines made from the Vitovska and Malvasia Istriana grape varieties.

History[edit | edit source]

The Carso DOC was established in 1975, with the aim of protecting and promoting the unique wines produced in the region. The area has a long history of wine production, with evidence of viticulture dating back to the Roman Empire. The region's unique terroir and climate have made it an ideal location for the cultivation of grape varieties such as Vitovska and Malvasia Istriana.

Geography and Climate[edit | edit source]

The Carso DOC is located in the northeastern part of Italy, in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. The area is characterized by its karstic terrain, which is composed of limestone and dolomite rock. This unique terroir contributes to the distinctive characteristics of the wines produced in the region.

The climate in the Carso DOC is characterized by warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The region's proximity to the Adriatic Sea has a moderating effect on the climate, helping to maintain a consistent temperature throughout the year.

Grape Varieties and Wine Styles[edit | edit source]

The Carso DOC is known for its white wines, particularly those made from the Vitovska and Malvasia Istriana grape varieties. These wines are characterized by their aromatic complexity and minerality, reflecting the unique terroir of the region.

In addition to white wines, the Carso DOC also produces red wines from the Terrano grape variety. These wines are known for their deep color, high acidity, and distinctive mineral notes.

Viticulture and Winemaking[edit | edit source]

Viticulture in the Carso DOC is characterized by small-scale, family-run vineyards. The region's karstic terrain and harsh climate make viticulture challenging, but also contribute to the unique characteristics of the wines.

Winemaking in the Carso DOC is focused on expressing the unique terroir of the region. Traditional winemaking techniques are often used, including fermentation in large, old oak barrels and extended aging on the lees.
